City Gardening: Get Ready for Spring 2008
$90.00
Saturdays: March 1, 8, 15, 29, April 5, & 12, 2008 (6 classes) 10.00 a.m. - 12 noon
March 1 - Planning the Small City Garden
The small garden presents a special challenge, whether you are starting from scratch or renovating an existing garden. First, a strategy for dealing with that overwhelming question “How do I get started?”. Next, how to make the most of a small space.
March 8 – More Ideas for the Small City Garden
The city homeowner demands a lot from the limited space they have. How to deal with those needs. As well, how to deal with some of the special issues of the small urban space: privacy, shade
March 15 - Plants for the City Garden
It’s intimidating trying to learn about all the different kinds of plants. At the nursery it is hard to imagine what the young plant in the pot will be eventually. The beautiful flower in your neighbour's garden doesn’t have a name attached to it. This class will be an introduction to a selection of plants suited to the city garden (some of my favourites). We will look at slides and put names to faces. As well, we'll talk about care and growing.
March 29 - Soil Basics
Starting at the very beginning: what’s in good garden soil, how it works, how to prepare soil for a new garden, how to keep your soil in good shape.
Composting: what it is and how to do it.
April 5 – Garden Maintenance
A lot of what you do first thing in the spring can make your garden more successful and easier to look after. All the jobs you need to do in the spring to get your garden off to a good start and how to do them. Summer maintenance and closing up for winter.
April 12 – Garden Centre Visit
A guided visit through a local garden centre. What to look for when buying plants: what’s a good buy, what to avoid. Answers to those questions you were always afraid to ask the salespeople.
